Third Asia Pacific Seminar on Correctional

 

        Nearly 50 representatives from Prison Departments of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Thailand and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) attended the 3rd Asia-Pacific Seminar on Correctional Management organized by ICRC and co-hosted by the Sri Lanka Prison Department on 9-10 May 2016 in Colombo.

 

       Balancing Security and Humanitarian Needs within Prisons was chosen on the main theme for the seminar Correctional managers from each country have a chance to share their knowledge, experience, challenges and best practices regarding correctional services.

Also, representatives from Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) had a chance to share their best practice on Bangkok Rules Model Prison Project. The project launched by TIJ in cooperation with Thai Department of Corrections applied indicators criteria developed by Penal Reform International to evaluate the female prison performance and facilities. The best one that fully complies with the Bangkok Rules despite having a very small space with the overcrowding problem will be selected to the Bangkok Rules Model Prison. It will be on example for other prisons to see how they can comply with Bangkok Rules.
